Five things: Florida State vs. Duke
1. Big game or business as usual? For Florida State, ACC championship game weekend is old hat. The Seminoles were here just last year, after all, and this marks their third trip in Jimbo Fisher’s four years as coach. Fisher even began tweaking the team’s travel schedule earlier this season to prep for the distractions this weekend would bring. For Duke, however, its division title comes as a mammoth surprise, and none of these players had played in a game of this magnitude. Experience is clearly on Florida State’s side, but Duke has managed to live up to big moments all season, and while players might be new to a conference championship game, David Cutcliffe is not. He’ll have the Blue Devils prepared.
2. History as a guide: The numbers are ugly for the Blue Devils: In 18 previous meetings with Florida State, they’ve gone 0-18, lost by an average of 34 points, and never finished a game within two scores of a win. Yes, Duke already has had a history-making season, so perhaps a little more history is in the works. But if that’s the case, Florida State will need to buy into the conventional wisdom and come out slow, while Duke will need to forget everything that has come before.
3. Winston vs. Duke’s DBs: Jameis Winston looks poised to win a Heisman Trophy, and he has been spectacular all season. He’ll be a focus for Duke, but the Blue Devils’ secondary has shown a propensity for big plays. After allowing 10 pass touchdowns in its first two ACC games of the year, Duke’s secondary has allowed only six more in its next six games, while racking up 12 interceptions. Ross Cockrell and DeVon Edwards have led the charge, but they’ve not faced a challenge as immense as Winston. Florida State has four receivers ranked in the ACC’s top 11 in yards per catch, and Winston loves going for the big play.
4. Crowder vs. FSU pass defense: Asked earlier this week about the danger presented by Duke’s Jamison Crowder, the ACC’s leading receiver, FSU safety Terrence Brooks smiled. The Seminoles’ secondary isn’t afraid of anyone, he said, and it will take more than one weapon to beat them. It might sound a bit overconfident, but Brooks has the numbers to back up his boasts. Florida State ranks No. 1 in the nation in pass defense, and its 23 interceptions are tops in the country.
5. Ground gains: Florida State’s backfield rotation is running wild, averaging 9 yards per rush with nine touchdowns in its last three games. Devonta Freeman is now just 148 yards shy of rushing for 1,000 yards, and he has been stellar in two previous games against Duke. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils will want to establish the run, too, but might face a tough obstacle in doing so. Florida State’s first-team defense hasn’t allowed a rushing touchdown all season, and on first down, the Seminoles are allowing just 3.2 yards per carry — the sixth-best rate in the country.
While rivalry week offers plenty for college football fans to talk about, one aspect of this weekend’s games which shouldn’t be overlooked is the astounding season posted by the Duke Blue Devils. However, it could’ve likely all been for naught had they not pulled out this game against their bitterest rival.
In fact, many would contend that this victory was the single biggest in Duke’s history. It sealed the first 10-win season in school history and a berth in the ACC title game against Florida State. And of course, these accomplishments were made all the sweeter for Blue Devils fans since they came against a squad who’s typically had their number through the years.
Today’s victory marked the first time the Blue Devils won two consecutive games against UNC since 1988-89 and just their third win in the series since 1990. But their in-state foes didn’t make it easy on them. Tar Heel quarterback Marquise Williams, who had 330 total yards and was responsible for all three UNC touchdowns, was pivotal in keeping his team in this game.
Nonetheless, it was the play Williams didn’t make which Duke faithful will remember in this one. At midfield and looking for a game-winning field goal, Williams threw an errant ball which landed in the waiting arms of DeVon Edwards and sealed the historic Duke victory.
Whether or not Duke can hang around with Florida State next week in the ACC title game remains to be seen, but just getting there shows how far coach David Cutcliffe’s squad has come. And don’t be surprised if this gritty outfit makes it tougher than the Seminoles might like.
And what’s the only way you can survive your impending icy death in the South?.
By watching football and not leaving your house all weekend.
I promise, it’s the truth. Just make sure you have your bread and milk.
We went 5-5 last week with the picks.
This means our yearly Outkick picks are now sitting at 46-48.
There’s only one thing that can save us now.
Nick Saban creme pies.
Wait, what?
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -9.5
Oklahoma State is rolling better than just about any team in the nation.
Since October 26th the Cowboys have won every game by at least 18 points.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma has rebounded nicely since a pasting by Baylor.
Unfortunately another beat down is coming for Bob Stoops and crew.
Take the Cowboys, big.
Texas at Baylor -14
Remember back when Mack Brown was finished at Texas?
Well, those stories — absent the occasional flare up about Nick Saban to Texas — have pretty much died.
So regardless of what happens in this ball game, what’s next at Texas? And if Saban’s not coming, then who is the actual hire at Texas if Saban’s gone? There isn’t that deep of a coaching bench right now.
Baylor’s stubbed its toe of late, getting blown out at Oklahoma State and being thoroughly unimpressive for much of the game against TCU.
So what happens here?
I think Baylor regains its mojo and wins big.

Mizzou +2 vs. Auburn
I’ve swung back and forth all week on this game, but ultimately I believe that Mizzou has been the most impressive team in the SEC all season.
Yes, yes, I know, Auburn’s on fire, but Mizzou’s been consistent all year, their defense hasn’t allowed more than 28 points in a game and they overcame the loss of their starting quarterback. Absent a fourth quarter and overtime collapse against South Carolina, Mizzou would be 12-0 right now.
I don’t think Auburn matches up well on defense with Mizzou’s playmaking wide receivers and I think Mizzou will do just enough to clip Auburn 31-28.
Of course, the way Auburn has won its past two games the field may open up and swallow Dorial Green-Beckham just as he’s about to cross the goal line, Dark Knight style.
Stanford at Arizona State -3
It’s hard to give up points after how bad Stanford beat Arizona State early in the season, but the Sun Devils are on a roll right now and playing at home.
Stanford’s been fairly unimpressive on the road this year —€” losses at non-top 25 Utah and USC.
Yes, yes, I know that Stanford was up 29-0 at the half the last time these two teams played, but that was in September and at Stanford.
Since that time Arizona State has vastly improved.
I’m not sure how much better, if it all, Stanford is.
In the September game, Stanford bludgeoned Arizona State, running the ball 49 times. But what happens if Stanford gets down early? Can Kevin Hogan make plays in the passing game? I don’t think so.
If Stanford wins again, you can tell me I’m an idiot.
Duke +29 vs. Florida State
Look, FSU’s going to win this game, but David Cutcliffe’s going to have Duke ready to play.
Of course ready to play could mean losing by 30.
But it’s a conference title game in Duke’s home state and the weather will be cold and rainy and no one will be there.
Surely Duke can keep it within four touchdowns?
Right?
By the way, chances that Duke actually pulls the upset.
I’m going 0.0 percent.
Ohio State vs. Michigan State +5.5
I think Ohio State wins, but the clear play here is on Michigan State, who hasn’t allowed more than 28 points all season, and is giving you nearly six points on top of what I think will be a close game.
What’s more, the State offense that was so awful for so long, is finally showing signs of life.
The big question here is, can Michigan State’s first ranked run defense slow down Carlos Hyde?
I think they can.
Take State.
And now, Outkick’s TV Viewer Guide:
It’s the last college football weekend of the year until the bowl games arrive in force.
And there’s a ton to watch.
I’ll be in Atlanta covering the SEC title game for FOX so you won’t get to see my bright and shining face early in the morning. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday for the first time this year. (I have the Saturday morning radio show even when I don’t do television).
There’s no telling how fresh I’ll be at the SEC title game.
1. Oklahoma at Oklahoma State, Noon ET, ABC
What could be a great day of college football starts early.
If Oklahoma State wins, they lock up the Big 12.
But if they lose…
2. Texas at Baylor, 3:30 p.m. ET, FOX
… then Texas at Baylor becomes the default Big 12 title game.
If Oklahoma State has already locked up the Big 12 title, then the big storyline of this game becomes, does Mack Brown have to win to keep his job?
3. Mizzou vs. Auburn, 4:00 p.m. ET, CBS
The best thing about the SEC title game?
Going out drinking with Charles Barkley.
The second best thing about the SEC title game?
The game itself.
Every year the SEC title game becomes a bit more like the Super Bowl.
I’m curious to see how well Mizzou travels for this one. Because you know Auburn fans are going to buy up all the tickets they can find. And then some.
4. Stanford at Arizona State, 7:45 p.m. ET, ESPN
The Pac 12 title game is a rematch featuring two very good teams.
Unfortunately, it has no real ramifications on the national landscape.
So most of you will watch for a few minutes during commercial breaks.
5. Duke vs. Florida State, 8:oo p.m. ET, ABC
FSU is nearly a thirty point favorite. That means this game could be over very quickly.
If it stays tight, viewers will keep an eye on it.
But just about every college football fan in America will be watching the Big Ten title game.
6. Ohio State vs. Michigan State, 8:17 p.m. ET, FOX
I’ll be on the pregame show for a few minutes live from Atlanta.
And then comes kickoff.
I can’t wait to see what happens in this one.
If it’s tight all the way to the end, this will probably be the highest rated game of the year. Because you know the entire SEC will be watching as well. Plus, based on kickoff times, all of the other games will end before this one does.
Florida hung tough with No. 2 Florida State—for about one quarter. Then Jameis Winston and Kelvin Benjamin took over.
Winston connected with his top target, Benjamin, nine times for 212 yards and three touchdowns, spurring the Seminoles as they cruised to a 37-7 victory. Winston finished 19-of-31 for 327 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, adding to his strong Heisman Trophy resume.
The Gator offense struggled yet again, its downfield passing game completely absent. UF gained just 193 total yards and converted only one third down in 11 tries.
While the Gators’ nightmare season has finally come to an end, FSU is just one win away from playing for a national title.
With Duke’s 27-25 win over North Carolina, the ‘Noles will matchup with the Blue Devils in Charlotte next week for the ACC Championship.
Heading into Saturday’s game, it’s widely assumed that the Seminoles will be one of the two teams playing for a national title in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 6. Head coach Jimbo Fisher has led his team to a perfect 12-0 record, and no team has come close to taking down Florida State this year.
Featuring the nation’s No. 2-ranked scoring offense and its top-ranked scoring defense, the Seminoles have won every game by at least two touchdowns—including blowout victories over Maryland, Clemson and Miami.
The Blue Devils didn’t appear to be a threat to anyone after opening the season 2-2.
But since that time, Duke hasn’t lost a game, and one more win would propel this team into the Orange Bowl as the ACC representative—not to mention crush FSU’s title hopes.

Can Anthony Boone Keep Pace with Jameis Winston?
Grant Halverson/Getty Images
Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, then you know Jameis Winston is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this year.
Not only has he led his team to an undefeated record, but he’s accounted for 38 total touchdowns and has shown up huge in big games. As a result, Florida State features the nation’s second-ranked scoring offense, averaging 53.7 points per game.
Most casual college football fans likely haven’t heard much about his counterpart in Saturday’s big game, however, as Duke has flown under the national radar all year long.
Anthony Boone’s 2013 campaign hasn’t been perfect either, and his stats don’t come close to measuring up to those of Winston. Playing in nine games, he’s passed for 1,695 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, adding another four scores on the ground.
Despite his less-than-stellar season, Boone has shown sparks of life, passing for 530 yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last two starts. If he can continue his strong play on Saturday, then the Blue Devils will have a chance of winning.
Prediction
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
Is there any chance for Duke in this game?
Sure, but it’s miniscule.
Florida State’s roster is full of elite players who possess elite size, strength and speed. This team has taken down the three ranked teams it faced (Maryland, Clemson and Miami) by a combined score of 155-28.
Which team will win?
Duke Florida State Submit Vote vote to see results
Meanwhile, Duke barely squeaked past North Carolina in Week 14. Furthermore, it has only scored as many points as FSU averages once this year—in a losing cause against Pittsburgh.
Florida State’s No. 2-ranked scoring defense is led by a strong front four that will break down Duke’s offensive line, wreaking havoc on any potential game plan the Blue Devils have to try and control the clock with a running game.
It’s not going to be close.
Final Score
Florida State wins 49-17.
